Title'A View of Old Bregenz, Austria' by JMW Turner
DescriptionPencil, watercolour, body colour with red and yellow chalk on grey wove paper. Turner was one of the most significant artists of the 19th century. His innvoative use of watercolour helped to elevate the medium to a new level. Sir Michael Sadler bought this work and donated it to the Cooper Gallery along with a few other drawings in memory of his parents who had lived and worked in Barnsley. Turner travelled across Europe many times throughout his artistic career. He was in Austria in the 1840s at which time he visited the small city of Bregenz.
